I have 2 colonists with 14 and 17 animal skill and they actually succeeded in.
Webmy colonist is 18 animal skill and has a 5% chance so, doing this over and over eventually you'd get a tamed megaspider from a hive infestation, but a lot of effort.

Webi just had some roam on through my map and the option to tame them popped up.
